"You have the right to an attorney..." but not always. There is no constitutional right to an attorney in civil cases and, in over 70% of these cases, at least one person cannot afford an attorney and is not eligible for the good work of legal aid organizations. So, what do they do? Represent themselves. Can you imagine going into court, facing the other person, the court official, and all the rules without any help? I can't---and I'm a lawyer!
The Milwaukee Justice Center --the organization I oversee--offers resources, information, and advice to thousands of self-represented people. They may be trying to see their children, dealing with a bad landlord or bad tenant, looking to deal with a deceased parent's home, or needing to have someone pay them for work completed. In 2019, 10,500 people were assisted by over 450 volunteers who gave over 13,000 hours of volunteer service (a value of over $1.2 million in free legal service to Milwaukee!).
$50 helps us to make copies of paperwork for 3 clients seeking help with their divorce.
$100 helps us to fill the gas tank of the MJC Mobile Legal Clinic one time.
$150 helps us to produce training materials for 10 interns each semester.
$200 is the value of one undergraduate intern's volunteer shift.
$300 is the value of one law student's volunteer shift.
$500 is the value of one volunteer attorney shift.
